WHEATS AND TARES

Jesus told a story about a farmer who planted his wheat. While asleep an enemy planted weeds in the same field. When the harvest came, the farmer’s helper wanted to pull out the weeds that were growing with the wheat. The farmer refused, knowing pulling out the weeds could destroy the roots of the wheat.

Sometimes we destroy the good by trying to get rid of what we think is bad. A New York health official criticized a free breakfast program for school children, saying the free food made them obese. Preposterous. Better to risk obesity than to allow children to starve. Be careful about the decisions you make and the life you live. You may fail to do something good because you fear bad things that may never come. This is a word of warning to make life matter.

UNDEFEATED

The movie, Undefeated, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature of the year. It is the story of Manassas, a Memphis school, but more, it’s the story of commitment and believing as one man pours his life into a failing football team and brings them to a winning season for the first time in the history of the school The film is not about football, it is about hope and trust and one person making a difference.

It is the story of the love of a team by a coach, and a team for a coach who promised them hope if they would only believe in themselves.

I saw the film on the night it premiered in Memphis. The theater was packed and the excitement could be felt. But it is not just a feel good experience. The story exposes and deals with knotty issues like relationships, poverty, race and class, parenting, character, and the power of role models. I was thrilled with the movie Blind Side, but I think I’m more thrilled with Undefeated. I urge you to see it. It will be good for you because it is a powerful witness to making life matter.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE EVIL

I came away from a recent visit to the Holy Land with great sadness, as much as any place in the world; this is one of violence and everyday tension. My visit verified the fact that if history and religion teach us anything, it is that there will always be evil in the world, aggression,  oppression, greed for wealth and territory, and the denial of liberty to persons because they are women or of another race.
How to live with the reality of evil is a challenge for us no matter where we live as it is for people in Israel and Palestine. All the religions present there, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity say something about this. My Christian faith tells me that love and forgiveness are the most powerful forces in human relationships, and that those who live by the sword will perish by it.
I implore you: if you want life to matter, don’t let the reality of evil blind you to the redemptive power of love and forgiveness.

BETHLEHEM WALL

Robert Frost wrote, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that wants it down.” I felt that recently when confronted with the wall that divides Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. Israel maintains the Wall is a temporary structure to separate the West Bank from Israel and prevent suicide attacks on Israeli citizens. Whatever truth is in that, the fact is that this is an extreme measure that is denying thousands of innocent people the ability to earn a living from their land, reach their schools or work places, access adequate water resources, and essential health care.

When I first encountered it, the same feelings raged within me that I had on my first visit to the Berlin Wall.  It is that…a wall that imprisons 100,000 citizens in their own city.

I pray daily for the peace of Jerusalem, but since my visit to the wall, my prayers for the Christians who are imprisoned by that wall have become more intense.  Join me in prayer that life might matter to all the people of the Holy Land.
